The Fall Prevention Program at The Laurel Highlands Center is designed to help you stay steady, confident, and independent as you
age. At The Laurel Highlands Center in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, skilled physicians Courtney Floyd, MD, and Ryan Floyd, MD
perform a comprehensive evaluation of balance, strength, mobility, medications, and environmental risk factors to identify what may
be increasing your risk of falls. We then create a personalized plan that may include strength and balance training, lifestyle
adjustments, and medical optimization to improve stability and reduce risk. Whether you’ve experienced a fall or simply want to stay
proactive, this program supports safer movement and long-term quality of life.
Falls can have serious consequences, especially as we age. These may include:
● Fractures (hip, wrist, spine)
● Head injuries
● Loss of independence
● Fear of falling, leading to decreased activity and deconditioning
● Hospitalization and long-term health decline
Falls are rarely caused by a single issue—they usually result from a combination of factors, including:
● Muscle weakness and decreased balance
● Medication side effects or interactions
● Poor vision or hearing
● Chronic conditions (such as neuropathy, arthritis, or cardiovascular disease)
● Environmental hazards (loose rugs, poor lighting, uneven surfaces)
● Previous falls, which significantly increase future risk
● Have experienced a fall or near fall
● Feel unsteady when walking or standing
● Have noticed a decline in strength or balance
● Take multiple medications
● Have chronic medical conditions affecting mobility or sensation
● Use a cane, walker, or other assistive device
● Want to stay proactive about maintaining independence and safety
Your visit will include a thorough, personalized assessment and clear next steps:
● Detailed review of your medical history and medications
● Evaluation of balance, gait, strength, and mobility
● Screening for contributing factors such as vision or neurologic issues
● Discussion of your home environment and daily habits, with a plan for in person evaluation during your program
● Development of a customized plan, which may include exercises, medication adjustments, and safety recommendations
You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your risk factors and a practical plan to help you stay safe, strong, and independent.
